Since 2001 Uretano Café (ウレタノカフェ) exists near the Edobashi bridge. This place is very famous considering its localization. I think most of people in the Mie University knows this place.
The name of the shop is a combination of two words: ウレシイ (ureshii) andタノシイ (tanoshii) which means “happiness” and “enjoyable/ pleasant”. As the owner told me “we try to express our own happy feelings to who comes here. Doing so, we think people can spend their time feeling happy, eating and enjoying a good food”. I think those wishes are perfectly transmitted to the costumers, once they enter in the shop and I hear them saying “oishii”.
Uretano Café is a very popular place. They update the lunch menu on their weekly blog. This system allows you to choose the best day to go and enjoy their homemade lunch menu, which includes rice, pasta, salad and soup in a combined set menu, served as a very tasty combination of Japanese and western style foods. Additionally, the foods usually come with plenty of salad and vegetables. So, this place is also very popular for people who are concerned about eating healthy foods. I think this is why Uretano Café is so crowded during the lunch time.
There is also the owner`s well-recommended sandwich menu other than the daily lunch one. There are some different types of sandwiches that can be eaten during lunch time or in the afternoon in the shop. However, since all of them come with a large amount of salad, I think it is better to be divided with two people rather than for one person only (it doesn’t mean you cannot eat it all alone).
Uretano Café is an ideal place to spend the snack time too. There, you can have parfaits or drink a cup of coffee, but I would recommend you to have their homemade sweets. There are a lot of kind of sweets and all of them are delicious. However, the choux cream is the one that is sold out faster. And there are reasons for that.
Compared to other shops, the choux cream here is big, crispy in the outside and it is filled up with the cream just before eating. Thus, when eating, this sweet is a bit cold and the cream feels tastier and delicious. The owner told me this is a “must eat” sweet in his shop and I also agree with him. Since the sweets are available for take-out, the choux-cream usually disappears after lunch time. So, you have to be quick if you want to try the choux cream!
Most of my friends are no longer studying here anymore. Some of them went back to their countries, while others moved to another places. However, there is something in common with my foreigner friends and Japanese friends: all of them love the choux cream and their sandwiches. And every time we meet again, Uretano Café is a must go place!
Uretano Café is located at Mie-ken, Tsu-shi, Edobashi, 1-92-14. It is located about 5 minutes walking from Edobashi station. It is closed on Mondays. It is a good place to go alone, in couples or with friends to spend a good, relaxing and a happy time.

みんなと食べたお昼、みんなと走り回った休憩時間。自分が小学生だった頃を思い出した。何をして、どんな友達がいて、誰が好きだったのか。子どもの頃、そして思春期。良くも悪くも、全ての世界が友達で成り立っていると感じた。
